UK Credit cards
There are 3 main types of credit card commonly applied for in the UK - credit, debit or charge cards. MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Diners International are the three biggest cards available in the UK. MasterCard and Visa provide an international service and now include new technologies such as chip and pin cards for making transactions safer and secure, in perticular for online transactions. The classic American Express card is a charge card with no credit available, the balance of the borrowings have to be paid off at the end of the month. Amex cards are different and have high spend limits permitted on a card in any month. These cards are more exclusive, but occasionally refused by some highstreet shops.
Debit Cards Switch, Maestro and Visa Electron are very popular cards with a good range of services. Some UK and worldwide internet sites or shops do not take Switch because Switch uses a different bank clearance system. Visa debit cards are processed almost everywhere because they use the more accepted Visa clearance system. Bill payments will often only be possible using a debit card however the contrary is true for some purchases, like car rental, where only credit cards can be used.
Status Cards Platinum and Gold credit cards are very much an ego issue rather than a financial prudence. They are provided by most credit card suppliers and supply few benefits over normal credit cards. A higher interest apr rate is sometimes applied for the benefit of the fancy colour card.
Store Cards Many stores, especially supermarkets like Tesco, offer credit for shop purchases. Supermarket money services and supermarket cards are available from the relevant store. They can offer good apr and perks for buying in their store.
Hybrid Cards Tailor made interest rate and rewards package can be negotiated and applied to a card for your own specific needs. Accucard is a main provider and supplies Lloyds TSB, More Th>n and easyMoney for a hybrid card option. Virgin credit card and Egg also provide hybrid cards with excellent finance packages.
Charity Cards - Charities designated by the card are awarded money as you utilise your credit card. The Co-op Bank, MBNA, and the Bank of Scotland provide these types of credit cards. These cards can work by giving a charity a flat fee for an application, and/or a percentage of the value of all purchases made on the card.
Charge Cards Charge cards are often confused with credit cards but the difference is that the balance must be paid off each month.
Student Credit Cards These credir cards are for under graduates and other students and made for the specific needs of being a student today.
